Computer Corner
MS Office 2007 has performed better with
consumer acceptance than Windows Vista, but still leaves much to be
desired. Combining that with the cost to upgrade will warrant some to
stay with their current office version a little longer. If you
haven't yet made the switch to MS Office 2007, there is a
patch availabe
to allow previous versions (Office XP/2003) the
ability to accept, open, and create 2007 documents. This will
allow the opportunity to upgrade when ready instead of upgrading out
of necessity.

BUSINESS JOURNAL INTERVIEW WITH DAVID HAMILTON
Many are familiar with the phrase "a means to an end;" that statement could not hold any more meaning for someone than it does for David Hamilton, President & CEO of Impact Logistics. Since David founded the company in 1986, he has taken every opportunity to invest in the lives of others. He sees his company as more than just a way to earn income, and the people who know him understand this better than anyone. Today, David uses his company as a platform to give back to his church and community, to provide hundreds of jobs around the country, and to mentor people along the way.
The Memphis Business Journal recently published a focus piece on David. "Get to know him by reading his inspiring answers at the following link:":

WHAT'S ON YOUR 2009 WISH LIST?
Improving your Safety Program can sometimes bring as much frustration as putting together a Christmas shopping list... you know that needs exist, but quite often, "the right fix" seems (1) elusive, (2) too complex, and/or (3) way too expensive.
At our recent IWLA Safety & Risk Conference in Chicago, the topic of my breakout session was "Best Practices," specifically in the realm of Management and Accident Investigation. Our group was comprised of other industry safety leaders, and all of them contributed ideas that they had implemented that, in time, had proven to be "difference-makers" in their Safety Programs. Are you looking for that "perfect gift" for your company and its employees this year? Then look over this list and ask the same question that I often ask myself at the register: "Can we afford to do without this?"
-
Safety Committees.
When managed properly, safety committees can foster "ownership" of the Safety Program among employees better than just about anything else. By including a cross-section of operational personnel, you will get different perspectives and ideas that otherwise would have gone unnoticed. Effective committees act as a grass-roots advisory board that influences policy with comprehensive investigation, interpretation, and application of recent events. Do yourself and your operation a favor... don't start another year without forming a working Safety Committee!
-
Incentive Programs.
Effective incentive programs reward for both individual and team behavior, and can possibly return dollars to your "bottom line" several times over in the form of Work. Comp. savings, new-hire training, insurance premium reductions, etc.
-
Regular safety education.
Twenty year-old videos are no longer the most effective form of training and education (were they ever?). Develop a training topic for each week of the year, and touch on a different aspect of that topic every day during that week. Training times will be shorter and much more memorable if you can boil that day's emphasis to a "take-away" statement. Over time, your workforce will be much more informed and more able to integrate their learning in the workplace.
-
Managerial ownership.
It goes without saying... if the leaders don't get it, no one gets it. Management, from the CEO to the front-line supervisor, must be committed (with their minds and their resources) to maintaining a safe operation.
-
Return-to-work Programs.
If you're tired of the cost and lack of production associated with long-term claims, get creative and develop a return to work program that accommodates work restrictions. Studies have shown that employees get back to work faster when they are accommodated during their rehabilitation, and it ends up being far less expensive for the company as well.
None of these ideas are earth-shattering; however, they could, in conjunction with one another, be just the boost your operation needs to see significant and safe improvement in the year to come. Wishing you all the best in 2009, Will McKay Director, Safety and Risk Management

IMPACT LOGISTICS' 2009 PLAN AIDS CHILDREN IN HONDURAS
For the past ten years, Impact Logistics has endeavored to
help the poorest children of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Without significant
assistance, these children, a high percentage of which live without family or
caretaker, wouldn't have food, clothing, or even the most basic medical
attention.
Impact is able to do this by partnering with Point of Impact, a humanitarian
organization that today helps over 300 children through a daily program. 75% of
the children who enter the program suffer from acute malnutrition; each child
is immediately placed under the care of POI physicians, who provide medical
attention (to the children and their immediate families) and daily balanced
meals. Staff teachers also supply
tutoring for school work to ensure that each child receives a chance to
graduate.
Point of Impact currently
exists in three of Tegucigalpa's roughest neighborhoods. This year, Impact
Logistics plans to grow POI by:
-
Opening a new facility in a fourth neighborhood.
This could allow for 75-125 additional POI kids.
-
Beginning to plan the first POI orphanage.
-
Allowing other companies and individuals to join
this effort through partnerships.
Further information about the efforts of
Point of Impact
